Josef Moucha (b. 1956 www.gallery.cz) studied television and film jour- nalism at Charles University; however, he never worked in those fields. Instead he devoted himself to photography, exhibiting his work and writing on photography. Last year he published essays on the history of photography and technical images, entitled Zážitek arény (Experiencing the Arena), also publishing his first novel, Mimochodem (By Virtue of Coincidence).

Our paths have been crossing in the arena of photography for about twenty-five years. From the start, I have seen you in two roles - as a photographer and as a photography critic. How do you yourself perceive this duality? Do you feel yourself to be more a photographer or a critic?

Fortunately, I don't have to make a choice. I am both equally. My uncle is an archeologist, and since childhood I have been fascinated not only by his excavations, but also by their interpretation.

Your photographs have always stood somewhat outside the mainstream. You probably felt closest to the visualism that was prominent in the Czech lands particularly at the turn of the 1970s and 1980s. Did you consider yourself a member of this movement, if we can use such term at all?(full article is available after purchasing a subscription - not available now)
